Hip Hop Shabbat
A few years ago, I had the privilege of putting together a Hip Hop Shabbat service for NFTY-EIE. Somehow, I lost most of the fonts and never went back to fix it - until tonight. I had breakfast with my advisor at HUC who expressed interest in having me combine my passions of sports or music into my studies. It reminded me of the neglected Hip Hop Shabbat presentation and how much I loved putting it together. So I came home fixed it up all purty to share with you.
Below, you can click through the image files of the slide show and what tracks I lined up with what prayers. Beneath that are download links for the Keynote and PPT presentation. I created in Keynote so I'm not sure how it will turn out in Powerpoint. There is also a download link for the folder of fonts I used in creating the powerpoint.
I would love to hear your reactions and invite you to collaborate with me to make this an even better tefillah experience. Shoot me an email at rabbi@alexkress.com!
Note on the Music
For good measure, I made a Spotify Playlist of the music I used and embedded it here. The only song missing is KRS-One's Life Interlude which Spotify doesn't have but you can find here. Please note that some songs are explicit. For these, we either sang them a capella as a niggun (e.g. Power), just sang the chorus (e.g. Daydreamin'), or sang through them (e.g. "What the hell are we living for?" in Love in War by Outkast). This service was built for a teenage tefillah experience and needs to be adjusted for other groups.
